White Center?

My roommate wants to move in with her boyfriend in White Center in August, and she's asked me to come with her (we currently live in Shoreline). She and her boyfriend have offered me a staggeringly reasonable rate on the rent, and we are about as close as sisters (friends since early childhood). I don't actually know that much about White Center, but my impression of it is not great. Unfortunately, I can't afford to rent anywhere on my own in the greater Seattle area, so the choice is between moving with her, or moving in with strangers elsewhere.

Tell me things about White Center, people. I am counting on you to help me make this decision. I'm a geek who likes books, board gaming, thrift stores, and friendly coffee shops. Will I be happy there?

PEOPLE OF SEATTLE! Yesterday you witnessed the MIGHT and the POWER of my SOLAR UNCOMFORTABLIZATION NEGA-RAY!
free organ (spotted on 25th avenue NE)

I saw this by the side of the road and tried to fit it in my car, but couldn't, so had to leave it. I got some offers of help to go back and get it! But sanity has edged out a certain kind of crazy awesome, mostly by pointing over at the rack of tube equipment I have not yet rebuilt. So this beast:

...as of 3pm on 1 May 2013 was at 6856 25th Avenue NE, Seattle, FREE. If you know anyone interested in a pretty groovy retro/late-70s organ, it's a Lowrey Pageant Genie, and Lowrey is actually a good maker of organs - Soft Machine, The Who, The Band, and The Beatles all used them at times.

This one is a midrange unit, apparently - high end for home. I have no idea whether it works and am not the person who put it out there, nor do I know who did. But the key action was good, it seemed physically solid, with no apparent damage. It's even pretty clean.

It's about four feet wide, I'd guess a little over three feet tall? And about a foot and a half deep, to give some clearance space, and it doesn't disassemble. You'll need some room.

Hotel recommendations?

My husband and I are going to be visiting Seattle in May and are looking for some good hotel recommendations. I've been looking on Travelocity and reading reviews, but I don't know much about the areas or their locations in respect to the "tourist" stuff (Space needle, Pike Place) as well as the safety of the areas.

Also if there are any recommendations for things we should do that would be awesome. We made our way up to Seattle for a few hours when we visited Portland last Sept. This time we're spending several days in both cities.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So I have looked around on a couple of group hiking sites and I haven't quite found what I am looking for.

Does anyone know of hiking/camping/outdoor groups geared toward young adults (about 20-26 year olds give or take a couple years - I'm 22) that pretty much just meet and hike/camp/etc. for social reasons or anything? Doesn't matter if it's specifically for singles or couples or whatnot, just a group of people around that age that enjoy the outdoors that keep a pretty good schedule to meet?

Have you had any experiences being part of anything like this?

Anyone know where I might find a store or person who may want to buy an Antique doll head? It's my aunt's and she's had it for some forty years. It's just a head and a small purse, she isn't asking for much, but would like to sell it if it's at all possible.

Unfortunately I don't even what type of doll it is :( but working on more information.

Thanks!

I think the Seattle Times has a lot of chutzpah thinking that they can now charge for on line content when most of their content is not even provided by the Seattle Times but by the AP. Very little of what's posted as "news" on the Times site is originated by the Times. According to the times I have one more article. Will I subscribe? Pretty unlikely.

In the last week after weathering a random snow storm, it was time and everything blew up into a giant carpet of pink and white. I went down early in the morning on an especially nice day for Seattle to check out the sights.

[ ++ See the rest of the Washington Cherry Blossoms Photos ++ ]

Today is the first Thursday of the month, so check out these free museums in the Seattle area;

http://freemuseumday.org/sea.html

Also, the EMP is doing an exhibit on video games, & from 5p-8p it's free today. Normally the tickets are $15 an adult.

Hope this helps!
(PS; It's me! I was the one moving to Seattle across the country back in Jan, just to check in with some of the comments from that post, I made it! I enjoy it here & everything is a-okay! Thanks for all the great advice & welcoming me here!)

Robitussin with Codeine

I only just now realized WA is one of the four states where you can legally buy this OTC. (I have the nonstop cough of throat-searing, gagging death and called up a friend who's a pharmacist in another state who told me about this. http://www.reference.com/motif/health/states-is-codeine-cough-syrup-non-prescription ) Apparently it's darn near impossible to find a pharmacy that will actually sell the stuff OTC though. Anyone know of any in Seattle? Bonus if it's in Northgate or surrounding areas. As crummy as I feel, I would drag myself out of the house and go show a pharmacist that I'm coughing until I dry heave if it means I could get some relief without having to sit through hours at urgent care somewhere.

[Edit: Adding this for anyone who comes across this entry in the future with the same question. I ended up going to the doctor and he gave me an Rx for the Codeine stuff (and antibiotics). When I picked it up at the pharmacy, I asked the pharmacist about this supposed OTC stuff. He said that it is, in fact, legal in WA, BUT 1) it's a different concentration (less Codeine) than the Rx stuff, and most importantly 2) You'll NEVER find any pharmacist willing to dispense it, around here anyway. It's apparently a huge pain in the ass, requires a lot of paperwork, and in an urban area like this, he said any pharmacy known to dispense it would have people literally lined up around the block trying to get some. He said maybe somewhere in the boonies of central or Eastern WA you could find someone who dispenses it, but not here.

♫ The more you know... ♫]

Has anyone else had the garbage trucks show up WAY too early in the morning? I set my alarm for 5:00 today and the sound of the garbage truck banging through the alley woke me up well before then. Isn't there a law that says you can't be so loud before a reasonable hour? Because shiiiit.

Endodontist needed

I'm looking for an endodontist, preferably around downtown or central seattle (between 90 and 520 is good).

I've been putting off a root canal for like a year because the idea scares the shit out of me, but I should really just get it over with... I'm more concerned with aptitude/competence than cost, but my insurance situation is confusing, so it doesn't hurt to have a place flexible/understanding in that department either. I looked through the dental tag, but most of those posts were pretty old, so I figured I'd go ahead and ask. :> Thanks for any recs!

New 3rd ed. D&D group forming

My husband and I are starting up a third edition Dungeons and Dragons group, and looking for a few more folk to join us. We'll be meeting primarily at our place in Lynnwood, WA, once (maybe occasionally twice) per month. Some previous D^2ing experience would be nice, but we're willing to teach a bit, too - basically, all experience levels welcome... just bring an open-mind, a warped sense of humour, and an eagerness to play. My husband will be DMing, but it would be awesome to have someone else who is able to do so, too, to shake things up a bit down the road (and to give him a break every now and then.) Oh, and you should not be allergic to pets, as we have a few. Any takers?
