don't shop at deep roots, seattle

the following is a chain of events which ensures i will never give Deep Roots any more of my money.

a few weeks ago:
1. went in looking for 5/8" lobe jewelry with a shorter width so as not to bump into my vertical conch piercings
2. found some screw-together steel tunnels which would do the job
3. was not allowed to touch or closely examine eyelets due to a sterility policy in the store, but was told they're from custom steel, & that suited me fine
4. paid, left store.

that night:
5. realized that one tunnel had a large scratch on the side from where someone used metal calipers to measure its gauge
6. realized that the interior of the tunnels were NOT polished, & that the outside polish was lousy & flawed
7. realized this is nothing pat would ever let out of his shop
8. called deep roots to inform them of these things & request my money back despite their no return policy. after ten minutes, was told i'd have to talk to the owners on sunday.

that sunday:
9. went in to talk to the owners. eventually got them to agree to take the flawed, defective jewelry back. got only store credit written for the dollar amount of the jewelry, despite my having paid tax. was assured that the tax would not have to be paid again.

last weekend:
10. went in, found something suitable to spend store credit on. this jewelry was the exact amount of the previous jewelry.
11. had to fight for another ten minutes over $5.40 which i refused to pay again
12. had to get counterdick to call owners again, same owner chick answered who had assured me of #9 above
13. was told "you know what? just take them" on the phone, making me feel like i was trying to PULL ONE OVER on them, when they were trying to rip me off AGAIN.

fuck those people. some of the jewelry's really nice, & some of the people working there were great, but i'll never go in there again & they'll never get my money again.

snark all you like.

What lousy customer service. They could easily have gloves for customers to inspect things with in the first place.

You should Yelp this.

i understand being paranoid about sterility, & i appreciate it to a certain degree, but metal can be autoclaved.

they were actually going to give me gloves when i first asked for them, but then the dude put them on himself & held it up FOR me. yeah, helpful.

Thanks for posting this! The next time I buy body jewelry I will be sure to ask what kind of insurance I have against purchasing flawed/broken jewelry that I'm not allowed to thoroughly inspect. I fully understand and appreciate the sterile issues, but there has to be some kind of policy in place to protect the customer, too.

just don't go into deep roots. i've never before had to fight to return OBVIOUSLY FLAWED jewelry. hell, wildcat.co.uk will let you return jewelry you DON'T LIKE inside a week, & if the jewelry's defective, they'll pay your shipping back.

slave to the needle let me touch things if i used their hand sanitizer first. that's completely reasonable to me. plus they let me exchange the double flared plugs i bought at one shop for single flared at the other after i changed my mind. (it was obvious i hadn't tried them on, as i was at 1/2" & those plugs were 5/8".)

the point of my every comment here: fuck deep roots.

That's really unfortunate. Thanks for the review. I used to buy jewelry from them on occasion and now that I"m in the market again they are off the list.

good. slave to the needle has a much better selection anyhow, & is less expensive though i was specifically told by the staff of deep roots that SttN was "way overpriced" & i shouldn't bother going. mm-hmm.

I was not happy about a tattoo appointment/consult I had there last summer. They did at least give my deposit back. They need to reel in their egos a bit. I will never go back there again.

if you're looking for tattoo artists, ben moss at apocalypse is outstanding.

i'm hardly one to talk about others' huge egos, but cripes, be REASONABLE. & don't make me a promise about tax & then flip it. it's not about the five fucking bucks, it's that you're trying to rip me off. i'd have fought for a quarter with that kind of attitude.

Something similar happened to me at a different shop, which is why I generally walk out at #3. I hate stores like this, especially with a no refund policy. As a matter of fact, I hate anyone that wouldn't be completely appalled that a defective or low-quality piece of jewelry was purchased at their shop and offer a refund or exchange right away.

[info]lishd

July 25 2007, 21:42:18 UTC 4 years ago

agreed totally.

i didn't walk out because i had never been there before, & the shop is impressive looking. i didn't have a reason to distrust them. plus i had been scanning shops all day looking for jewelry & hadn't yet found ANYTHING feasible. so they got more of my patience than usual, & look how it turned out.

well, hopefully it will turn into a big lack of business for them. assholes deserve to close their doors.

thanks, i couldn't agree more. let my words ring true for decades to come, long after that awful shop has gone out of business.

i'm considering posting fliers of this post. oh, yes, i have that kind of time!

i've also had a less than stellar experience with deep roots- tho not with jewelry. the tattoo artist was very rude and brusque, and did not listen to what i wanted at all. unfortunately for me, i went ahead and got the tattoo despite my reservations, and now i have a permanent reminder to be more picky and give jerks in tattoo shops the finger.

i heartily agree, avoid deep roots.

Most of this sucks, but I have to tell you that sales tax, under Washington State Law, is never refundable: the tax is on each transaction, not on the net items you walk out of the store with.

That some stores will not ask you to pay tak on an exchange means they're taking the tax out of receipts; it's also, technically, illegal to do it that way.

[info]lishd

July 25 2007, 23:40:26 UTC 4 years ago

had they told me that, i'd have paid it. unlike them, i'm reasonable. but i was specifically told i WOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TAX AGAIN.

My tattoo artist works there(for like the last year). But other than him, i've had no experience with anyone else there. They seem nice enough, but ya never know.

July 26 2007, 02:00:56 UTC 4 years ago

some of them were nice, as i said. that doesn't mean the owners don't have their heads completely up their asses.

some tattoo guy there, ryan or something, fucked up my roommate's tattoo--she got a simple peace sign on her wrist and he went way too deep and the ink bled, and now her skin is all blue and icky around her wrist. also it scarred really bad and the tattoo is all hard and raised because of it.... i warned her against going somewhere on the ave, but young impulses run strong, or something.

yea they are dicks at deep roots. my old roomie got a tattoo there and the guy was a complete dick about drawing up exactly what she wanted. he expected her to pick flash off the wall.

and i was looking at jewelry a couple of times and they just hovered over me like i was gonna grab the shit and run. and they are over priced.

i like slave for jewelry and go to aberrant for tattoos & possibly some jewelry now cause they are getting some cool stuff in.

[info]lishd

July 26 2007, 14:58:26 UTC 4 years ago

they never hovered over me, but everything's in cases, so it's not like it's grabbable now anyhow.

i went in there looking for new plugs, and stood around in an -empty shop- for 10 full minutes before the girl even said hello. she was on the phone, on a clearly social call, the whole time.

when she asked what i was looking for, i said new plugs, and a new cbr for my conch. i pulled my hair back behind my ear to show her the old jewelry, and she FREAKED and demanded i use an antibacteral wipe. okay. i have worked in so many goddamn tattoo/piercing shops, im not an idiot, i didnt even come close to touching my piercing. excellent customer service, SIKE.

i pointed out the plugs i wanted, and she insisted she had call the owners to check the price. ... um, OKAY i guess. they owners had no idea which ones she was talking about, and she didn't know what to call them either. i kept saying "double flared stone plugs. 00g." but she kept rolling her eyes at me, because clearly i dont know as much as her because i dont work there. the kicker is that they were -already priced-. it was clearly marked on the tray.

when i tried to pay, the girl called the owners -again- to ask how to run the CC machine. the conversation was full of "oh did you hear about ___________? lol isnt that so funny. oh the shops slow. yeah. lol. thats cool." etc etc. HELLO im standing here still. i dont know if you noticed.

slave to the needle is more expensive (because the jewelry is higher quality), but id rather just go there and pay more. all the piercers have awesome bedside manner and they are just A+++ the whole way around.

[info]lishd

July 26 2007, 14:57:45 UTC 4 years ago

i would've asked to talk to the owner since she was already on the phone. "hi, i'm waiting for your counterbitch to get her head out of her ass. the shop's not empty. loll." however, knowing the owners as i do now, it probably would've resulted in some sort of hypocritical tongue lashing.

test drive? why didn't you inspect the merchandise before leaving the store, lishd? (had you done that, you'd have saved yourself a lot of agro and time spent posting/reading here on lj.)

as i said, they claimed it was by custom steel. i'm highly familiar with pat pruitt's company, & i'd trust anything that came from it. i did not expect to be lied to in that way.

Thanks for this post. I've had to return jewelry before despite supposed no-return policies (nothing like being sold 4g jewelry in a bag marked 6g!) and was treated quite fairly considering the policy. Sorry you had to deal with this shit.
